One of the oldest zoos in America, the National Zoo was created in 1889 and shortly thereafter became part of the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to displaying animals for the public, the zoo served as a safe habitat for wildlife, such as bison and beaver, which were vanishing from North America. Contributing to this refuge, the first flying birdcage was constructed there in 1901.
