Niagara Falls, New York, A Miniature Maid of the Mist, c1890

What began in 1846 as a steamboat filled with passengers and supplies, soon became a tourist attraction when a new suspension bridge across the Niagara River drew transport business away. The Civil War caused the original owner to sell the Maid in 1861, leading to a temporary stay of operations, but new owners revived the sightseeing boat in 1885.
