Niagara Falls, New York, Shanties on the Ice Bridge, c1902

Each winter the ice below Horseshoe Falls would freeze, allowing people to cross the Niagara River from the United States to Canada. Shanties for ice fishing and selling various wares were sometimes constructed along this path on the ice. The so-called bridge was used without incident until 1912, when three people lost their lives after it gave way to the icy waters below.
