The Erie & Ontario Railroad was established in 1835, becoming Canadas first railroad. Through the mid-1800s, wooden tracks between Chippawa and Niagara were used by horse-drawn carriages full of tourists, traveling at speeds of five miles per hour, and stopping at points dictated by either scenic vistas or impassibility. The laying of modern tracks in 1853 allowed for steam trains, and soon led to a great extension of the line from Queenston to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
