Syracuse, New York, Parade Float on a Railway Car, c1932

Johann Mang, a physician and German immigrant, is believed to have opened Syracuses first brewery in 1804. The brewing industry prospered into the early 1900s, until 1920, when prohibition banned the consumption and commerce related to alcoholic beverages, impacting the local economy. The Gambrinus statue design, complete with stein in hand and part of a well-known local brewerys faade, was borrowed for the anti-prohibition parade in 1932. (Currently on display at the Onondaga Historical Society)
